As an avid gardener devoted to a wide variety of spring and summer bulb plantings - which have been a source of joy to my family and neighbors for many years - the repeated annual destruction of our prized plantings by bulb devouring mice, moles, chipmunks, prairie dogs, squirrels had all but caused me to "throw in the towel" on such plantings. In my mind, the rodents with their ferocious appetites, had won!
The beautiful and expensive Lilies, Tulips, Muscari, Scilla and especially the Crocus planted so painstakingly in the fall were decimated every following winter or immediately after their initial blooming the next spring/summer.
While I didn't particularly like the idea of it, my continual "blasting away" with a shotgun and/or putting out poison did little as a permanent solution. My family objected to these harsh measures to control or limit the degree of destruction by these critters - even though most of them are undesirable rodents. They were particularly concerned about the use of poisons which could affect birds, wild fowl and especially pets. Also, the substantial "collateral" damage to the plants from the shotgun was, after all, a deterrent to its use.
My wife's plaintive and repetitious pleadings with me: "Why don't you just put a cage over the bulbs to protect them?" - finally made me think: "What if I put the cage in the ground around the bulbs where it would protect them from 'burrowing and digging' rodents?"
