Early on, we understood the importance of designing an effective bear-proof latch if we were to “make a difference” with the bear problems. The criteria established for the new latch were that it be bear-proof, easy to operate, durable, and ADA compliant. We gathered valuable information working with wildlife biologists who understand the behavior and capabilities of bears. We also worked with suppliers of commercially available components to utilize, where possible, proven off-the-shelf products. We incorporated their valuable input into our design efforts. The resulting design is very simple for users to operate but requires grasping, orientation and insertion of a detached handle which is beyond the capabilities of bears. It has a clean, attractive appearance. It requires no maintenance other than lubrication, but is field replaceable if problems ever occur. Tamper-proof hardware is used to discourage vandalism. We believe the latest version of our latch to be completely compliant with ADAAG (see info page on ADA Compliance). We are confident that this latch will be a very effective tool in the ongoing efforts to prevent bears from accessing storage containers used for human food, trash, and recycling.
