The Bay Dog was created in 2001 and opened its first store in April 2002, in the historic town of North East, Maryland, at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. In May of 2003, The Bay Dog opened its second store in Harborplace, the retail cornerstone of Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor.
The Bay Dog, a Labrador Retriever, was chosen as the symbol of our company for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the Lab is perhaps the best family pet in America, and maybe even the world. It is certainly the most popular breed of dog in the United States, and for good reason. Labs epitomize all of the most desirable qualities to be found in man's best friend. They are patient, humble, trusting and loyal campanions. Labs are friendly, joyful, affectionate and playful clowns, but they are also intelligent, curious, enthusiastic, accomplished and full of potential.
The other reason the Lab was chosen to be the Bay Dog was its absolute love of the water. Whether swimming and retrieving sticks along the shore just for fun, working hard tracking a downed duck, or just relaxing while spending the day on a boat with its best friend, a Lab embodies that special feeling that comes with life around the Bay or any body of water.
