General Robert E. Lee
Robert Edward Lee, "The Gray Fox" son of Harry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee, will go down in history as one of, if not the most memorable military figure in our nations history. He served bravely in the Mexican War, there Captain Lee rose to the the rank of Colonel and served with other celebrated officers (including Joe Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregaurd, George McClellan and George Meade) all on General Winnfield Scott's staff. He and many of his fellow soldiers would later become adversaries in the war that pitted brother against brother. Lee, a Virginian and devout loyalist to his state, resigned his commission in the U.S.Army in 1861. In 1862 was called to Richmond, Virginia to serve as Jefferson Davis's military adviser, but due to an injury to his fellow classmate Joe Johnston, he became commmander of the Army of Northern Virginia. Although Lee could not control every military aspect of the Confederacy, it's success and failure lay heavily on his shoulders. Lee was always admired by both sides and if nothing else will be remembered as a Gentleman.
