GENERAL NATHAN B. FORREST

Nathan Bedford Forrest, a self made business man and quite wealthy for a man of his time, had very little education and no military training. Forrest enlisted as a private in 1861 and emerged from the war with the rank of lieutenant general plus mythical status. There is probably no man in this war that was hated or loved more than he. General Sherman of the Union called him "that devil" because of the utter chaos he caused by destroying and disrupting the railraod supply lines. During the war he was shot at least four times and numerous horses shot out from under him. He also was personally responsible for the death of more than 30 Union soldiers in hand to hand combat including one of his own men in a knife fight, the man exuded tenacity. His style of fighting was the forerunner of the German Blitzkreig tactics of World War II. The man, when asked about his success in the war, simply replied "I just got there first with the most men".

ARTIST COMMENTS

Nathan Bedford Forrest has always fascinated me. As a portrait artist, I try to find something in the subject that peaks my intrest and just looking at this portrait, it is his eyes that captivate you, he is the only one of the four that makes you wonder, just what is going on in that mind of his. The man had little or no education but yet was an extremely wealthy businessman, no military training whatsoever and yet was able to rise to military genius status. His features are amazing and his eyes are penetrating. I like to think that Forrest would most likely whip the guy who came up with the term "mean as a snake.
