The Create A Pearl Necklace is a gift that is often started at birth by purchasing a single freshwater pearl or one inch of pearls, strung on silk, and attached to a cable link chain. Then pearls are added every year until the necklace is 18" long.

A starter necklace consists of either one single freshwater pearl, or one inch of freshwater pearls measuring approximately 5.5mm to 6mm in diameter. They are strung on silk and attached to a fine cable link, sterling silver or gold plated chain. We suggest you give this to her early in her life--perhaps her baptism or first birthday. You will also receive cards with one inch of freshwater pearls on each of them. Now you are prepared to give her a gift of pearls at any special occasion in her life. Communion, Confirmation, Birthdays, Christmas, An Excellent Report Card, Graduation... When each occasion arrives, all you need to do is gift wrap one card of pearls and present this special gift to her. This is the perfect gift for someone who lives out of state. You can easily mail her one inch of pearls for special events. At any time these pearls can be removed from the cards and added to the original necklace by having them strung onto the necklace (for a fee). However, most people prefer to wait until she is older before stringing them all together. The last pearl card also contains a beautiful, sterling silver filigree-style clasp to complete the strand. A. No, the choice between a 14 karat gold clasp or a sterling silver one is merely an issue of preference. The kits that come with 14k gold clasps are priced at $500.00 and the ones with the sterling silver or gold-filled clasps are priced at $450.00.
Q. Why does the kit only come with 16 cards? Doesn't that mean the pearl necklace will only be 16 inches long?
A. A fully strung create-a-pearl kit will yield an 18" long pearl necklace, and here's why: When pearls are strung into a necklace, they have knots tied between each pearl. The combination of pearls, knots, and the addition of the clasp will give you an 18" long string of pearls.
Q. Some of the pearls seem slightly smaller or larger than the others, and some of the "inch of pearls" cards are not exactly one inch long, why do there seem to be inconsistencies with the pearls?
A. Pearls are made in nature, and nature isn't always exact. Because of this, pearls are sold in size ranges. Just because a pearl is 5mm does not mean it is exactly 5mm. The pearl may be closer to 4.8mm or 5.1mm. This isn't done to cheat or mislead the buyer, it is simply done because every pearl is slightly different, so they are matched up as well as possible. All of the pearls in a Create-a-pearl necklace will be of similar size and quality, and despite the range in sizes, the necklace will still be 18" long when it is fully strung.
Q. What should I do if I want the finished necklace to be longer than 18"?
A. Additional inches of pearls can be purchased and strung up with the ones in the kit.
