Simmons' research formed the basis for modern-day sleep technology and they continue bringing you products that provide Better Sleep Through Science™. In 1870 Zalmon G. Simmons built his first factory in Kenosha, Michigan. With the help of nine employees, Simmons manufactured wooden insulators and cheese boxes. Then in 1876 he created an entirley new industry when he decided to mass-produce woven wire mattresses. Something nobody else had every even thought of before Simmons. In 1899 he introduced Spiral Spring Coils for woven mattresses and his new manufacturing process dropped the price of woven wire mattresses from $12 to .95 cents, enabling everyone to sleep much more comfortably.
In 1912 Simmons introduced the Wall Bed which he then produced exclusivley for Murphy Beds. By 1919, Simmons had introduced cotton felt mattresses and had opened up manufacturing plants in San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Elizabeth, Seattle, and Atlanta. The Rouring 1920's became the time when Simmons created a nation-wide service-station system under which retailers could only show samples of the Simmons mattresses and the customer would recieve the actual mattress from Simmons after that had paid for it with delivery within 24 hours. Simmons made the first affordable innerspring mattress in 1924 and in 1925 his top engineer, John Franklin Gail, designed and developed the first machine to coil a wire and insert it into a fabric sleeve quickly and efficiently resulting in the unique pocketed coil that became the trademark for the Simmons BeautyRest mattress.
in 1957 Simmons created it's National Technology Center (NTC) in Munster, Indiana. A highly sophisticated research and engineering labratory committed to developing products that would help consumers get much better sleep.
