Simmons is the world's number one name in bedding—with $1 billion in worldwide sales. And the number one market share in accounts where we do business. Our history is one of innovation. Today more than ever, Simmons is dedicated to producing distinctive, consumer-benefit-driven products, such as Simmons® Beautyrest®, Simmons BackCare®, Olympic®Queen and various adjustable sleep products. Simmons introduced technological innovations like the Pocketed Coil™ spring machine, the wall bed and the Hide-A-Bed®. With such famous people like Henry Ford, Dorothy Lamour and Eleanor Roosevelt as advocates for Simmons. Simmons' research formed the basis for modern-day sleep technology and they continue bringing you products that provide Better Sleep Through Science™.

In 1870 Zalmon G. Simmons built his first factory in Kenosha, Michigan. With the help of nine employees, Simmons manufactured wooden insulators and cheese boxes. Then in 1876 he created an entirley new industry when he decided to mass-produce woven wire mattresses. Something nobody else had every even thought of before Simmons. In 1899 he introduced Spiral Spring Coils for woven mattresses and his new manufacturing process dropped the price of woven wire mattresses from $12 to .95 cents, enabling everyone to sleep much more comfortably.

In 1912 Simmons introduced the Wall Bed which he then produced exclusivley for Murphy Beds. By 1919, Simmons had introduced cotton felt mattresses and had opened up manufacturing plants in San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Elizabeth, Seattle, and Atlanta. The Rouring 1920's became the time when Simmons created a nation-wide service-station system under which retailers could only show samples of the Simmons mattresses and the customer would recieve the actual mattress from Simmons after that had paid for it with delivery within 24 hours. Simmons made the first affordable innerspring mattress in 1924 and in 1925 his top engineer, John Franklin Gail, designed and developed the first machine to coil a wire and insert it into a fabric sleeve quickly and efficiently resulting in the unique pocketed coil that became the trademark for the Simmons BeautyRest mattress.
In 1925, Simmons also began to studdy "sleep". In the 1930's Simmons introduced the Studio Sofa which worked much like a futon and then later developed into a SofaBed or Hida-Bed in the 1940's.

In 1937, Dr. Harry M. Johnson released the very first study done on sleep which was conducted at the Mellon Institute and commissioned by Simmons. The study used a motion picture camera, movement detector, and became the landmark study that has developed into Simmons Sleep Through Science(TM).

in 1957 Simmons created it's National Technology Center (NTC) in Munster, Indiana. A highly sophisticated research and engineering labratory committed to developing products that would help consumers get much better sleep.

In 1958, Simmons introduced the Queen and King size. Moved the Headquaters to Atlanta in 1975 and was teh official mattress for the Winter Olympics of 1980.

Fast forward to 1995 and you will be there when Simmons introduced the Simmons BackCare mattress which is the designed to help keep proper spinal alignment with support and comfort through five zones of the body. You will also be there when Simmons introduced the Bowling Ball mattress to demonstrate how the movements of one partner can be less likely to disturb the other with the Simmons BeatyRest mattress.

Also that year, Simmons opened the Simmons Institute for Technology and Education.

"Power Sleep" became the Best Selling Book by Dr. James Maas who worked with Simmons. Simmons also worked with many sleep experts such as Dr. James Wellman, the director of one of the nation's largest sleep disorder clinics.

TODAY, Simmons has over 18 manufacturing plants in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as 23 International licensees and sub-licensees.

The Simmons BeautyRest has celebrated 75 years and The Simmons BackCare continues to help avoid back-pain by as much as 33%.
