GENERAL GEORGE E. PICKETT

George Edward Pickett, a Virginian by birth, was a Union captain in the army before he resigned in June of 1861. Gen. Pickett led the Confederate "Game Cock Brigade" at Williamsburg and Seven Pines, he also participated in the battles of Gaines' Mill, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Drewry's Bluff and the Petersburg and Appomattox Campaigns. He will forever be remembered for a courageous charge that ended in failure. "Pickett's Charge" although named for him, he did not order it. On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863: General Longstreet, following the command of Lee, ordered the famous charge, which Pickett bravely led. Although a failure, it will be remembered as the most famous frontal attack of the war and lift Pickett to military immortality.

ARTIST COMMENTS

This portrait has sentimental value to me, because it was the first of the four that I completed. When I started this series, I was going through all of my refernce books and magazines, looking for the twelve generals that were going to be part of the series. When I came to Pickett, my best friend Roddy, who was in the special forces of the Army, saw this photograph of Pickett and said "Oh Yeah Pickett's Charge". He then proceeded to tell me how he had learned about this famous charge in military history.
As before, in my comments on the other portraits, I have mentioned a little something about the eyes of the subject that fascinate me. They are my favorite feature to portray and I try to capture them perfectly. When you look into his eyes, you can't help but see this man's soul and determination that made him a hero of the south. This portrait is in two sizes and styles. 16"x20" image sized limited to only 500ea. signed and numbered. Also 20"x24" image sized on 90lb. Arches Coldpressed Watercolor Paper limited to only 100ea. signed and numbered. Both are Giclee prints and of highest quality.
