AS THE [DOG] WORLD TURNS

The Ongoing Saga with Homeward Bound Rescue

The Dogs II

LUCY (aka Lady)

Boxer, Female, 2/3 yrs old
From Clifton, VA
Came to Animal House 12/14/07

Lady Lucy came to the Animal House heartworm positive (strong) and with a behavioral problem - she was afraid to come indoors. That problem has been solved and we were working on her heartworm issue.
PEPSI

Dachshund x, Female, 2 yrs
From Robeson Co, NC
Came to Animal House 2/17/08

The paperwork that accompanied Pepsi and her sibling was so messed-up, we couldn't figure out who was who. We ended up calling the Brittany x Mercy because she was so sweet and this one Pepsi (a derivative of Pepi, the other name). Pepsi was on antibiotics when she left the Animal House for a URI she most likely got from her sister, Mercy, since we had not separated them.
MIDGET

Dachshund x, Female, DOB 5/25/2007
From Rowan Co, KY
Came to Animal House 1/26/08
MINNI (aka Mo, Moe)

Shepherd x, Female, 5 yrs
From Robeson Co, NC
Came to Animal House 1/05/08

Minni was one of my favorites, she was just so sweet. She came to AH heartworm positive (strong) and a grade 3 heart murmur. When the vet was asked why Minni was unable to gain weight, she stated that the reason quite possibly could be the severity of her heartworm.
NANA

Boxer x, Female, 1 yr
From Guernsey Co Dog Pound, OH
Came to Animal House 1/06/08

Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes, hold your head high. Look it squarely in the eye, and say, "I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me."

-- Ann Landers

LITTLE JOHN (aka Rusty)

Dachshund x, Male, 6/7 yrs
From Guernsey Co Dog Pound, OH
Came to Animal House 1/5/08.

As you can see, Little John is camera shy. He left the Animal House on 3/04 with a bite on his flank having received it from Selena. When the Dog Law inspector saw the wound during their inspection, her remark was, "It looks like it is healing nicely."
MATILDA

Dachshund x, Female, < 1 yr
From Nicholas Co, WV
Came to the Animal House 1/31/08

Matilda was being treated for bilateral conjunctivitis; Cherry eye (possibly secondary to the conjunctivitis). According to the vet, Matilda may require surgery for the Cherry Eye if the condition did not resolve with the ointment treatment.
ROCKY

Lhasa Apso, Male, 1.5 yrs
From the MD SPCA
Came to Animal House 2/01/08

Rocky came to AH because he had failed his 'food' portion of the MD SPCA's 'SAFER' assessment. Anyone who knows anything about Lhasa's knows they can be persnickety. We found Rocky to be an absolute gentleman, and in fact, not the typical Lhasa personality at all.
SHEA

Lab/Chow x, Female, 4 mo
Came to Animal House mid January

Shea came to the Animal House from a Homeward Bound foster home in Etters. The foster family was having aggression issues with the puppy and wanted a more 'professional' assessment. Our assessment turned out to be that Shea was most likely a Chow x and she was one of those dogs who required 'permission' to be touched (as Paul found out when he went to move her that rainy Tuesday evening).
SCOOBY

Lab x, Male, 5 yrs
From a HB previous foster home; OH
Came to Animal House mid February

We have no pictures of Scooby because he had already been posted on HB's web site prior to coming to the Animal House.

Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.

-- William E. Channing

ROBBY (aka Sammy, Bruce)

Springer x, Male, 8 mo
Came to Animal House 2/9/08

Robby came to the Animal House as a Homeward Bound bounce-back (return). The previous family had adopted him as a puppy, having been told he was a Golden mix. As he grew, he became aggressive with the children of the family and they finally had to return him for aggression issues. Robby left the Animal House with a slight URI and was on antibiotics.
SEBASTIAN (Bashful)

Cocker, Male, 6 yrs
Owner Surrender
Came to Animal House 1/19/08

Sebastian was actually a 'relative' surrender since his owner was dead. He was a local dog whose owner had been dead two weeks before anyone knew. The dog had been with his [dead] owner for that period without food. We think, considering Sebastian's history, he was doing quite well. He had started to put back on some weight and was actually coming out of his depression. Wouldn't you be depressed given the same circumstances?

When Sebastian came to AH, he was emaciated (as you might imagine), had callouses on both butt cheeks (as if he had constantly been sitting on concrete for an extended period), and had a very large growth in his ear. The vet's assesment of Sebastian's condition was actually better than it looked.
THEODORE (aka Teddy, Toots)

Pom/Spitz x, Male, 2 yrs
From Bowling Green KY
Came to the Animal House 1/19/08

Teddy turned out to be one of the nicest dogs to come through the Animal House. He absolutely adored children and loved attention.
WEEZIE

Boxer x, Female, 8 Mo
From Spalding Co, GA
Came to the Animal House 1/27/08

No picture available
SELENA (aka Sevi, Seven)

Lab x, Female, DOB 8/29/06
Owner surrender
Came to the Animal House 2/14/08

Even though Homeward Bound had Selena listed on their web site, we were not comfortable adopting her out yet because we were working through some unsettling dog aggression issues with her.
ELLIE MAE (Momma Hound Dog)

Hound x, Female, age ?
From a HB foster home
Came to the Animal House mid-February

Hollenbach had brought 'Momma Hound Dog' to the Animal House to be assessed for aggression. We all thought this was a ruse to get us to take the dog since we could not find any issues with Ellie Mae. The foster home had been complaining about the 'momma dog' constantly escaping from it's confinement. When Ellie Mae came to the AH, she was extremely swollen with milk and found it difficult to walk or to get comfortable resting. She was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and was on antibiotics when she left AH.
